The Divine Mercy Shrine in Lake Sebu also sustained damages. We pray for all those affected, calling on the intercession especially of the Filipino saints.

A powerful earthquake struck off the Philippine's southern island of Mindanao this morning local time. The 7.8 quake was centered off the coast of General Santos City; nearly two dozen deaths have already been reported.

The quake triggered tsunami warnings across the region.

One of the places that sustained damage is the Divine Mercy Shrine in Lake Sebu. Posts by the Filipino bishops on X showed a large outdoor statute crumbled.

This area is one of the most seismically active regions in the Philippines, however this whole part of the globe is prone to earthquakes as it sits on geologically unstable plates.

A collapsed building is seen after an 7.8 magnitude earthquake in General Santos City on June 8, 2026.

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, pray for us.
Saint Pedro Calungsod, pray for us.
