The death toll from the 7.8 quake continues to rise as more than 3 dozen people are still missing.

"I assure the people of the Philippines, struck a few days ago by a powerful earthquake, of my closeness. I pray for the deceased and their families, for the wounded and for all those suffering because of this disaster," Pope Leo assured after praying the midday Angelus this June 14.

The 7.8 quake that struck Monday morning was centered off the coast of General Santos City.

More than 60 people are confirmed dead, and some 40 are still missing.
