Historic: First Asian bishop named to head a U.S. diocese

Deacon Greg Kandra - published on 01/10/17

From Rocco:

While Utah’s 300,000 Catholics have spent the last 21 months anticipating their 10th bishop, another vigil has extended far longer: the hopes of the nation’s 5 million faithful of Asian birth or descent to see one of their own take the reins of a US diocese. And now, on both counts, The Wait Is Over – at Roman Noon this Tuesday, the Pope has named Bishop Oscar Solis, the Filipino-born, 63 year-old auxiliary of Los Angeles, to lead a Salt Lake City fold growing at a remarkable clip. The Installation is set for Tuesday, 7 March.

There’s much more at Whispers.

Some background:

The son of Antonia Azarcon and Anselmo dela Fuente Solis, Oscar was born in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija on October 13, 1953. He has three sisters and a brother Ronald Solis who is a priest in Hong Kong. He finished his grade school at San Jose West Central School in San Jose, Nueva Ecija and high school in Maria Assumpta Seminary in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija. Solis was ordained a priest in 1979. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles by Pope John Paul II and was consecrated bishop on February 10, 2004. Solis’ first assignment was in a parish at Cabanatuan, Philippines and later became pastor in several parishes in The Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, Louisiana. When Fr. Solis was appointed Bishop, he was serving as Rector of St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
