Cupich: hospitalized Cardinal George in good spirits

From The Chicago Tribune:

A day after the Archdiocese of Chicago announced that Cardinal Francis George was back in the hospital, Archbishop Blase Cupich said that his predecessor was in good spirits.

“He was very good to talk to, as he always is,” Cupich told reporters after Palm Sunday Mass in Holy Name Cathedral. “He asked me how I was doing, and said, ‘You’re doing a good job.’ No matter how he’s doing, he always asks me how I’m doing.”

George, Chicago’s retired archbishop, stopped treatment for cancer several months ago. He has been admitted to Loyola University Medical Center. Cupich said he recently visited with him.

In a statement Saturday, the archdiocese described George’s treatment as being for “hydration issues and pain management.”

During the Palm Sunday Mass, Cupich asked parishioners to pray for those who are sick, especially Cardinal George.
George said in January that doctors had run out of options for his cancer treatment and he was focusing on quality of life rather than a cure. He stopped receiving an experimental drug treatment in December because it wasn’t working.

He retired in the fall and handed over the reins of the archdiocese to Cupich, who was installed as archbishop in November.

During the Palm Sunday homily, Cupich asked parishioners to reflect on “how God’s action results in transformative power to change people’s lives.”

“Step out of the normal patterns of our life and be open to the grace that God is offering us,” Cupich said before the packed church. “To really believe that God’s transformative grace is really working.”
