A deacon is called to be a sign of the Catholic Church’s permanent availability to the servant mysteries of Christ, which are embodied in such things as the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, said Deacon James Keating, director of the permanent diaconate program in the Archdiocese of Omaha. The archdiocese welcomed 12 men from rural and urban areas to the role of servant in the permanent diaconate in a 10 a.m. ceremony May 5 at St. Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha. Archbishop George J. Lucas ordained George Butterfield, William Carter Jr., Joseph Hartnett, John Konsel, Gerald Mapes, Alberto Martinez, James Nardini, Kent Sachau, John Starman, Rodney Wiebelhaus, Matthew Wolbach and Allen Wolverton. The deacon is a liturgical sign of Christ the servant, Deacon Keating said. “The deacon is not simply a man who serves, but a man whose service flows from the altar, a service to the church that flows from the mystery of Christ’s own service,” he said.
