For prayer and reflection
“I declare your name, refuge of my life, because you have ransomed my soul from death.”—Sirach 51:1b-2a
On this day, we also remember Saint Gregory Decapolites. A monk who lived in the region of the Decapolis (in the region of Galilee), he was an outspoken opponent of the iconoclasts (who disagreed with the use of sacred images in worship), at whose hands he suffered greatly. Saint Gregory died around the year 824.
Almighty and merciful God, who brought your Martyr blessed Zef to overcome the torments of his passion, grant that we, who celebrate the day of his triumph, may remain invincible under your protection against the snares of the enemy. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
