Blessed Hartmann

Friend of Popes and of the Poor

Kries CC

Bishop (ca. 1090-1164)

His life

+ Hartmann (who is also known as Armand) was born to a noble Bavarian family in Oberpolling, Germany. He was educated by the Augustinian canons of St. Nikola Monastery and, following his ordination he was made dean of the cathedral in Salzburg, Austria.

+ Named bishop of Brixen (in modern-day Italy but part of the Holy Roman Empire in Hartmann’s time), he was recognized for his generosity and wisdom, and was a counselor of popes, emperors, and the poor who came to him for guidance and support.

+ Hartmann strongly encouraged the ministry and prayer of the monks and canons serving in his diocese.

+ Blessed Hartmann died in 1164 and devotion to the holy bishop was confirmed by Pope Pius VI in 1784.

For reflection

A child shall be born for us,
and he will be called God, the Almighty;
every tribe of the earth shall be blest in him.—Entrance Antiphon for the Mass of December 23 (from Isaiah 9 and Psalm 27)

Almighty ever-living God,
as we see how the Nativity of your Son
according to the flesh draws near,
we pray that to us, your unworthy servants,
mercy may flow from your Word,
who chose to become flesh of the Virgin Mary
and establish among us his dwelling,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

(from The Roman Missal: Collect for December 23)
