There’s a new song at the top of the Christian music charts and it got its start on, of all places, TikTok. Katy Nichole’s debut single, “In Jesus' Name (The God of Possible)” was only released in March, but it’s already garnered millions of listen. Now, it’s been sitting at #1 on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs for five weeks.
Nichole’s meteoric rise to fame began with a simple TikTok video, with the caption “No, this is not released.” In the brief clip, Katy accompanies herself on the piano while singing through the chorus of her hit song. The video soon went viral and drew the attention of Centricity Music, who were quick to sign her aboard.
It’s easy to see why the song was such an overnight success. With a voice that brings to mind Katy Perry and the ability to write her own songs, Nichole is the full package from a marketing standpoint. On the Christian side, however, Nichole is a bonafide star.
Faith in music
One of our favorite parts of Nichole’s music is that it is an extension of her faith. The lyrics for “In Jesus' Name” originated in a prayer journal she kept in order to help her contend with her anxiety. In an interview with Movie Guide, she explained that while reading through her journal, she felt called to turn her thoughts into song:
“I had a moment with God, where I just felt Him asking me to go to my keyboard and play something. It turned into the verses of the song. It was really one of those moments where I was like, ‘This is what I need to hear, so maybe someone else is going to need to hear this, as well.’”
Another aspect of this budding star is her beautiful humility. In an Instagram post, Katy is listening to the radio as they prepare to debut her single. She’s practically in tears as the hosts recount the tale of her 3-year battle with scoliosis, a particularly painful case that left her mostly confined to bed the entire time.
When the intro concludes and her music starts up, she can’t quite hold the tears back anymore. Rather than boast or scream in celebration however, all she can bring herself to say is “Praise the Lord!”
More to come
“I just want people to continue to praise the name of Jesus. There is power in that name. The only goal I had when writing this song is for people to hear that name and be curious if they didn’t know…
“Everyone needs prayer and that was part of the writing process. What does the world need right now? – prayer. Moving forward with the new music I’m going to create, I just want people to feel that healing presence. Whatever the story I may be telling, I want them to feel the healing presence.”
We anticipate tons of great new Christian tunes from this phenomenal 21-year-old artist. If her comments are any indicator, then we can expect more faith-filled tunes that come from the heart.
