8. Ponte Sant'Angelo: The beautiful bridge was the last stop for pilgrims walking toward the Basilica of Saint Peter. Also known as Bridge of the Angels, it goes across the Tiber River and connects to the entrance of an important castle, formerly Hadrian's Mausoleum, now called Castel Sant'Angelo. At different times in history this castle served as a refuge or a prison for several popes, with its famous “Passeto del Borgo," a “secret” or “hidden papal escape route” that connects directly to the Vatican.
