Saint Théophane Vénard, in Saint-Loup-Lamairé (France)
St. Théophane Vénard, canonized by Pope John Paul II together with the 117 martyrs of Vietnam, was born on November 21, 1829 in Saint-Loup-sur-Thouet, at this house located on the great road that now bears his name. Visitors can see his parents’ room, where Théophane and his five siblings were born, the kitchen, and the classroom of the school where Théophane’s father Jean Vénard used to give classes as the village teacher. You can also see some of the school desks and chairs. On the wall is displayed a map showing the route that Théophane followed when he left Paris on September 16, 1852, to go to Tonkin, Vietnam, where he arrived in June of 1854.
