Saint Jeanne Jugan, in Cancale (France)
Saint Jeanne Jugan, founder of the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Poor, was born in this cottage on October 25, 1792. She lived simply during the first 25 years of her life, in a single room that housed her entire family. At the age of 24, she refused to marry a young sailor who had asked for her hand six years before: “God wants me for him. He is keeping me for a work that is unknown, for a work which has not yet been founded.” It was in 1839 that Jeanne began to serve the elderly. The house of her birth, housing period furniture, is open for visitors from June to September.
