Seat of Wisdom Sedes Sapientiae is an old title for the Blessed Mother that forms part of the Litany of Loreto, and has its roots in the scriptural use of the term wisdom as a name for Our Lord. In Eastern tradition, Our Lady was also called the Chora you Achoretou, or “Container of the Uncontainable.” Both of these realities are appropriately expressed in the prototype of another image showing Mary seated on a throne with the child Jesus in her lap, but emphasizing Mary’s majesty and her privileged role in holding the child Jesus, thereby being the seat of wisdom and containing that which is uncontainable.
