Theotokos Iconography
A number of Byzantine icons depict the Mother of God, or Theotokos, sitting. Many such icons are variations of a few early archetypes. Two of the originating icons that gave rise to many others are Our Lady of Tenderness, in which the child Jesus is nestling up against Mary’s cheek, and the “Hodigitria” icon, in which Mary is holding the child Jesus in one arm, and pointing toward him with the other.
