The Codex Aureus of Lorsch
This Codex is an illuminated copy of the Gospels produced during the time of Charlemagne (late 700s or early 800s). Two engraved ivory panels form the cover of the book. The center image on the front ivory panel shows the Blessed Mother holding the child Jesus in her lap, and seems to foreshadow the archetype image of Mary, Seat of Wisdom, that would flourish in the Middle Ages.
