SAINT LAWRENCE: Born in Spain, Saint Lawrence was appointed deacon of Pope Sixtus II and was treasurer of the Church. Like the Pope, he was martyred under the persecutions of Valerian in the third century. As he was the treasurer, his persecutors asked him to hand over the riches of the Church. He then told them, as a simple answer, that the Church's true treasure are its orphans. Furious, the prefect had him torn open with a severe whipping and roasted on a grill.
