Robert Campin's Annunciation is full of symbols of Mary's virginity: the snuffed candleflame of lust, the clean linen towel, the closed cabinets and the velvet bag with its drawstring; just visible above Gabriel's wing, a miniature Infant Jesus bearing a cross descends a beam of light to Mary's ear.
