Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann
As a prodigy Brahms lived with the family of his mentor, Robert Schumann. He developed a close emotional relationship with Schumann's wife, Clara, a mother of seven. After Robert's death, Brahms moved away but continued a purely platonic relationship with Clara. Writing frequently, Brahms helped to lift her spirits with wise words: "My dear Clara, you really must try hard to keep your melancholy within bounds ..."
