Traditionally, brides were given a special handkerchief, or a "magic hanky," on their big day. It would be used to wrap the bouquet or to mop up the inevitable tears, but afterwards it would then be turned into a baptismal bonnet once a new baby arrived. After that, it was passed down to the next generation. Today the linen lace-trimmed hankies are often sold with
sewing instructions to ensure a perfect bonnet.
