Give them responsibility
If you're doing a big grocery shopping, give your kids a couple of dollars to spend on what they want (you can veto). Whether it's a cereal, a drink, or a special yogurt, show your kids that they have a limited budget they have to stick to. This is great for preventing lots of extras from falling in the cart -- and it boosts math skills.
