St. Josephine Bakhita - overcoming horrors with a kind heart
Born in Sudan, Josephine was captured as a young girl and enslaved for 12 years, going to different families. She was sometimes treated horrifically. One master took her to Italy, and when her last mistress had to leave for Sudan on business, she left Josephine with the Canossian Sisters in Venice. There she found God and refused to leave the religious order when her mistress returned. The courts ruled in her favor, and she took vows and lived a life of service to others always with a smile and gratitude.
