Servant of God Thea Bowman (1937-1990)
Converting to Catholicism at the age of 9, Bowman (a Franciscan sister) had an impressive education, gaining a PhD in English. She taught for 16 years and gave powerful presentations throughout the U.S. to try and break down racial and cultural barriers. She was instrumental in creating Lead Me, Guide Me: The African American Catholic Hymnal. She died of breast cancer at 52, but her work still resonates today.
