St. Kateri Tekakwitha
This first Native American saint was inspired to choose the name Kateri, the Mohawk translation of Catherine, after learning about St. Catherine of Siena. As a teen she converted to Christianity and promised herself to Christ, even though this proved unpopular with her people. She died at a young age, but on her deathbed, the disfiguring scars from childhood smallpox miraculously cleared up.
