The Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo is dedicated to Sts. John and Paul – not the two great apostles, but a pair of early Christian martyrs with the same names. The brick edifice was constructed in the Italian Gothic style and competed in 1433. The interior is decorated with many extraordinary paintings and statues. The basilica became the traditional burial site of the doges, the supreme leaders of Venice. 25 doges were buried here.
