There are any number of great cathedrals that might have made our list, but Chartres Cathedral is considered by many to be the most perfectly realized of the medieval cathedrals of the High Gothic style. After the original cathedral burned down in 1194, people from across Europe donated money and labor to rebuild Chartres.  Most of the stonework and windows have remained unchanged since that time. Like some other places on this list, Chartres Cathedral has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
