Lough Derg (meaning Loch or Lake Derg) is more popularly known as “St. Patrick’s Purgatory.” According to legend, the saint grew tired of trying to convince people of the reality of Heaven and Hell. He prayed that the Lord would provide some kind of proof so that he could convert them. The story goes that Jesus showed St. Patrick a cave where people could look upon souls experiencing the temporal sufferings of Purgatory. A monastery was later established at the lake.
