Offer a friendly ear
If your friend is feeling low and needs to talk, give them the opportunity to get their feelings, or fears, off their chest. Do not compare their illness with any of your own aches and pains, or offer medical advice (especially if it runs counter to their on treatment plan). However, if they ask you to provide  a distraction, you could always share some fun anecdotes to lighten things up.
