The Doom
The church of Sarum St Thomas was built in 1220, the same year that St Thomas Becket’s relics were translated into a new shrine in Canterbury. This Last Judgment scene frames the sanctuary (or chancel). Christ is seated in Majesty, with Our Lady and St John the Baptist on either side. Beneath him are the Twelve Apostles seated on thrones of judgment. On the left the dead rise to judgment and are welcomed by angels among the blessed in the mansions of heaven. On the right, unfortunate souls are hustled into the jaws of Hell by demons.
