Sant’Apolinnare in Classe is a large basilica in the countryside about five kilometers (three miles) from Ravenna. It was built on the site of the martyrdom of the city’s first bishop, St. Apolinnare. Once covered extensively with mosaics, only those in the apse and on the triumphal arch remain; the rest were destroyed by the Venetians in 1449.
