Built in 1998 in front of Almudena Cathedral in Madrid, this 10-foot bronze statue depicts Pope John Paul II with his arms open, welcoming the world. It was placed here as the cathedral had been consecrated by John Paul II in 1993. Spanish sculptor Juan de Ávalos said he wanted to convey a sense of “welcoming” and “inclusion.”
