Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger was born on April 16, 1927, a Holy Saturday, in the town of Martkl am Inn in Bavaria, Germany. He was baptized the same day. His parents, who came from families of farmers and craftsmen, were both devout Catholics. Joseph's father was a police officer, and his mother, Maria, was a hotel cook before her marriage.
