1943: Joseph caught in the turmoil of war
In 1943, at the age of 16, Joseph was forcibly enlisted in the Hitler Youth. In 1944, he was assigned to the Obligatory Work Service, and managed to avoid being drafted into the Waffen-SS. He was drafted into the Wermarcht, but managed to desert when he learned of Hitler's suicide, despite the risk involved.
