Vienna, Austria
The first winter market recorded in Vienna’s history dates back to 1298, when ruler Albrecht I granted Viennese citizens the license to hold a “December Market,” out of which a Christmas market later developed. Today, Austria’s capital hosts its annual Christmas market in its historic town hall square with the old neo-Gothic town hall building, built in 1883, acting as the perfect backdrop to the festive decorations and wooden huts where local craftsmen sell their creations.
