Good luck grapes, Spain
On New Year’s Eve many Spaniards gather by their town or city’s cathedral to hear church bells strike midnight. That’s when they eat meticulously counted sets of 12 grapes each. The tradition of the “uva de la suerte” (literally “good luck grapes”) dates back to the year 1909, when a prolific harvest in the area of Alicante in southern Spain let some vineyards owners to widely distribute the fruit to fellow townsmen. It is in fact believed that each grape will bring good luck for each month of the coming year.
