The Shrine of Our Lady de La Leche, St. Augustine, Florida
Devotion to Our Lady de la Leche (Our Lady of Milk) came to the United States with the first Spanish settlers. They built a chapel dedicated to Our Nursing Mother of Happy Delivery and enshrined a statue of Mary nursing the child Jesus, creating the first Marian sanctuary in the United States. While the original chapel was destroyed, the present chapel holds a replica of the statue and stands next to the spot of the first parish Mass in what would become the United States. Pilgrims to the Shrine are often mothers or mothers-to-be asking for the Blessed Mother’s intercession.
