Our Lady, Help of Christians

Australia became the first nation to choose “Mary, Help of Christians” as their principal patroness in 1844. We turn to her to ask her to beseech her Son for mercy.

St. Mary MacKillop

Australia’s one and only canonized saint is St. Mary MacKillop. Pope Benedict XVI spoke of her as a saint who was notable for her perseverance in the face of difficulty, so she is a good saint for this cause. Read more here.

Venerable Sister Mary Glowrey

This courageous pioneer was the first woman to be appointed to a hospital in New Zealand. She carried out much of her mission in India, but is a native of Australia. Venerable Mary, pray for your homeland. Read more here.

Venerable Eileen O'Connor

This woman suffered a paralyzing break in her spine at the age of 3, and lived a short life in constant pain. But this did not cripple her zeal for the Lord and her neighbor. Her body was found incorrupt and her cause for canonization continues. Venerable Eileen O'Connor, pray for your suffering homeland. Read more here.

Venerable Caroline Chisholm

This woman had to fight plenty of adversity, but she just kept on going. She was able to help thousands and thousands of immigrants to Australia, particularly young women. We ask her to pray for the land she served. Read more about her here.

Our Lady of Good Help

Finally, let us call on Our Lady of Good Help. This apparition of Our Lady is not linked to Australia; in fact, it is the only approved apparition of the Virgin in the United States. However, this is a particularly fitting invocation of Mary for this cause, since the apparition occurred in the midst of the USA's deadliest wildfire, with an estimated 2,500 victims. A million acres were scorched, but the shrine to Our Lady, in the midst of it, was untouched. Read more here.
