Goias, Brazil
During the Torch Procession (Fogaréu) in Goias, hooded Catholic faithful representing Roman soldiers, known as "Farricocos," carry flaming torches. The ceremony is a re-enactment of the arrest of Jesus Christ. The costumes are of medieval origin, and were used by penitents so they could atone for their sins without having to reveal their identity in public.
