Hanging the holly
The evergreen plant of Ilex, commonly known as holly, flourishes all around Ireland starting from December. That’s why we owe the now world-famous tradition of "hanging the holly” on doors to the Emerald Isle. In the old says, children were given the task of wandering out in the fields to find the perfect branch of holly to put outside one’s door, as a symbol of good luck. If it had berries, it was considered even more lucky!
