In real life, Wayne’s relationship with his wife Josie had fallen apart, mostly due to Wayne’s infidelities. They divorced in 1943. Wayne later said that he deeply regretted allowing his first marriage to break up. Like many Hollywood stars, Wayne found it impossible to realize the ideal love that his characters achieved on the movie screen. He was married again in 1946 to Esperanza Baur and again in 1951 to Pilar Pallete. He and Pilar had three children and remained married until his death, though they separated sometime in the 1960s. He then lived with his former secretary, Pat Stacy, for the remainder of his life. Meanwhile, all seven of his children and his growing number of grandchildren were being raised in the Catholic faith.
