A heavy smoker, Wayne survived a bout with lung cancer in the 1960s. In 1979, he entered the UCLA Medical Center after being diagnosed with cancer. Wayne lapsed into a coma; but when a Catholic chaplain called the hospital, Wayne was able to tell his son, Patrick, that he would see him. Patrick waited outside the room but could hear his father and the chaplain talking. When the priest left the room, he told Wayne's children that their father had been baptized and received into the Catholic Church. Two days later, John Wayne died.
