The miraculous image of Our Lady of Czestochowa
This is one of the greatest treasures of Jasna Gora. The image was probably created in the 14th century by an Italian painter. There is a beautiful—though unbelievable—legend that the canvas was painted by St. Luke the Evangelist. The current size of the painting is not original, due to trimming of the original edges. The lilies on Our Lady’s dress and mantle are a heraldic motif, introduced by the Andegawen dynasty—the same dynasty from which St. Hedwig, wife of Polish King Wladyslaw Jagiello, descended.
