Enda had a sister, a holy woman named Fanchea who served as the abbess of a convent. Worried for her brother’s soul, Fanchea begged Enda to lay down his sword and live in peace. Tradition says that Enda finally agreed – but only on the condition that Fanchea allow him to marry one of the women in her convent. His sister yielded to his demand.
