Nicola Pisano created dual images of Christ in his Nativity for the pulpit in Pisa. One Christ lies swaddled in a manger resembling a coffin next to Mary, symbolic of his future self sacrifice. The other Jesus perches in the tub near Joseph, who gazes upwards in recognition of the two natures of the Child.
