Raphael 1504 Marriage of the Virgin
Raphael transformed Perugino’s design with his inimitable grace, softening the scene in a series of half-circles – the grouping of the wedding party, the volutes on the temple and the temple itself, evoking the ring of matrimony. His younger Joseph heralds a new iconography of the virile yet chaste spouse.
