NOIRLAC ABBEY
Located in Berry, 26 miles south of Bourges, the 12th-century Cistercian abbey of Noirlac is one of the best preserved monastic complexes in France. Built in 1150 by a small group of monks from Clairvaux, the abbey of Noirlac is a reflection of the monastic asceticism of the Cistercian order. The Cistercian asceticism is perfectly read in the simplicity of the architectural forms: the plain stonework, the unadorned capitals ... the whole invites to renunciation.
