ABBEY AUX DAMES IN SAINTES
Located on the right bank of the Charente river, Abbey Aux Dames, the first women's abbey in Saintonge, was founded in 1047. Until the French Revolution, it was one of the most powerful monasteries of the region. This former convent has become, today, a cultural center dedicated to music. The facade of the abbey church is famous for its typical Romanesque sculptures in the style typical of the region.
