SAINT-SAVIN ABBEY
This abbey, the flagship of Romanesque art in Poitou-Charentes, is imposing with its murals commissioned by the Benedictine monks. A French art theorist and Minister of Cultural Affairs once called it the “Sistine Chapel of the Romanesque period.” In the 19th century, thanks to the initiative of Prosper Mérimée, then Inspector General of Historical Monuments, the paintings, dating from the late 11th to the early 12th century, underwent restoration.
