The abbey of Royaumont was founded in 1228 by Louis IX -- the future St. Louis -- with the support of his mother, Blanche of Castile. Richly endowed by the king, who loved to spend time there on retreat, it experienced great expansion in the 13th century. Vincent de Beauvais, the preceptor of the royal children, wrote a famous encyclopedic sum of medieval knowledge, made with the help of the monks of Royaumont. The refectory, the kitchen of monks and the cloister are all exceptional sites not to be missed.
