Interior of St. Mary of the Angels Chapel
Inside, the chapel's wave-like walls are painted with a deep blue color—the same tone of the robe of the Virgin Mary—that radiates an intense feeling of calm, leading to prayer and reflection. Extracts from the “Requiem” in different languages are inscribed over the walls—a testament to Rotterdam’s multicultural population. A hole in the ceiling lets natural sunlight in—much like the “eye” of the Pantheon in Rome—creating beautiful and dramatic play of light. The lack of pillars or windows adds to the overall organic feeling of the building.
