Yet another Pieta that is full of drama and serenity at the same time. The almost indiscernible angel in the background on the left-hand side wipes away tears from his eyes. Mary holds up Jesus’ body and looks heavenwards, as if she wanted to give back the precious Body to God. Her eyes are sad but otherwise her face exudes trust. The Italian Daniele Crespi painted the work in 1626. [Prado Museum]
