The expressive style of the Spanish artist El Greco underscores the tragedy of the scene. Jesus’s Body is rendered in shades of green and blue, a clear indication of death. Mary’s navy-blue robe seems to be a frame for the dead body and unifies with it in terms of color. They stand apart from the yellowish-green figure of John or that of Mary Magdalene, enlivened with yellow, too. This color coherence stresses the relationship between Mother and Son. El Greco painted this work between 1578 and 1585. [Stavros Niarchos Collection, Paris]
